Dr Saskia Vermeylen - The Saltwater Collection and Sea Rights: A Tapestry of Belonging, Memory and Relational Laws

Dr Saskia Vermeylen is a Chancellor’s Fellow at the Law School at the University of Strathclyde.

In this presentation, Dr Vermeylen examines customary law and the sea rights of the Yolngu peoples in north-eastern Arnhem Land in Australia by exploring the mapping of ancestral land and sea rights as represented within the Saltwater Collection, and considers the coming together of two legal systems (colonial and Indigenous) through these maps.

Please note that this presentation contains images of ancestors and sacred sites.

This presentation forms part of the “Customary Laws of the Sea & the Legacy of Colonisation” event occurring on 11 June 2020 as part of the One Ocean Hub’s (https://oneoceanhub.org/) series of events in collaboration with UN World Oceans Day 2020 (https://unworldoceansday.org/).
