The 2024 report of the UN Special Rapporteur on the right to food, Michael Fakhri, focused on fisheries and the right to food in the context of climate change.

Published on the 28 March 2024, this blog discusses the report authored by Michael Fakhri, the UN Special Rapporteur on the right to food in 2024, which concentrated on the subject of fisheries and the impact of climate change on the right to food. The report specifically aimed to advance the human rights of small-scale fishers and Indigenous Peoples, building on the work accomplished during the International Year of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture. The report encompassed several key areas that the Hub has been focusing on, including the application of a human rights-based approach in the implementation of the FAO Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries in the Context of Food Security and Poverty Eradication (SSF Guidelines). The report also addressed the conflicting interests between marine conservation, climate change, and the protection of the human rights of small-scale fishers, as well as the potential threats posed by the blue economy. Additionally, the report touched on the significance of the BBNJ Agreement and the WTO Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies. The report cited the Hub’s submissions on several occasions.
