Legal requirements for environmental impact assessments in large-scale industrial fisheries are explored, advocating for inclusion of social and cultural impacts to ensure sustainable practice.

Published on 7 September 2022, this open access scientific article explains how large-scale industrial fisheries contribute to climate change, as well as to other negative impacts on the environment and on human rights. The article then sheds light on the international legal requirements for environmental impact assessments (EIAs) and on strategic environmental assessments (SEAs) that are applicable to large-scale industrial fisheries. It underscores that these assessments should consider the social and cultural impacts of the fishing industry. The goal is to ensure that the fishing industry operates sustainably, safeguarding both the environment and the well-being of affected communities.
