This paper explores a scholar-activist orientation to transdisciplinary research, arguing that people who inhabit scholar activist roles can assist with bridging networks of academic and non-academic networks, role players and movements to ‘build strongly engaged and relational transdisciplinary research’. The paper draws on lessons from the Coastal Justice Network in South Africa, particularly working with small-scale fishers in South Africa, such as the opportunities of including scholar activists in transdisciplinary research, embracing ‘the messy politics of alliance building’ and planning for sufficient time and resources for developing meaningful relationships.
